We Love You!

A few weeks ago as classes started we started publicizing a “We Love Kindermusik” promotion.  We ran contests.  We had giveaways.  We had a host of sweet notes and thoughts show up in our inboxes and on our Facebook wall.  I was so touched by so many of the lovely things you guys shared, but the truth is…we didn’t tell you the most important part.  While we are thrilled you all love Kindermusik, I hope you know how very much we love you.  Here’s what I love about the parents and kids I work with each week:

I love the wiggles and the wandering.  I really do.

I love the way those faces light up as I move around the circle to sing hello to each child, that look of “It’s my turn!”

I love toddlerese, even when I require a Mom interpreter.

I love the older toddlers and preschoolers who have a million stories to tell me right in the middle of class that have absolutely nothing to do with what I’m talking about.

I love when Princess Aurora and Spunky the Alien and dogs who moo come to visit me at class.  (I also love being asked to be “Prince Phillip.”)

I love hugs at the end of class.

I love regular requests to hear the “choo-choo train” again even when it’s supposed to be the week we listen to car sounds.

I love all the amazing creative ideas you and your kids have – choo-choo train sandblocks, homemade ukuleles, giving kisses hello.

I love seeing parents who are obviously in love with their kiddos and invested in helping them learn and grow and make memories together.

I love the “presents” of leaves, crafts, coloring pages, and notes that come to class.

I love hearing children count 1…2…8…9…10.

I love watching first words, first signs, first steps.

I love the laughter.

And most of all I love the way you all love and support one another.  You are amazing.  You are amazing parents – kind, nurturing, teachers.  You (and your kiddos) are amazing people – creative, smart, fun.  And you are an amazing community.  So…Happy Valentine’s Week, from the bottom of my heart.

With much love –

Miss Joy

Thanksgiving Road Trip – Kindermusik Style

by WishUponACupcake via Creative Commons License/Flickr

Don’t Forget!

There will be no classes the entire week of Thanksgiving, November 21-26.

But just because we’re closed doesn’t mean you can’t take Kindermusik on the Road.  We’ve got some perfect ideas for filling the long hours for a trip to Grandma’s.  You’d be amazed how much time a Kindermusik CD or two and a few of your favorite activities can fill.

Tips:

  • Load up your CD player or iPod/MP3 Player with Kindermusik Favorites.
  • Give every activity a try. You might be surprised at which ones appeal on the road. I know I was shocked to find out that those same “Warm-Up Exercises” from the Village class I couldn’t ever get my little guys to sit still for brought peals of laughter when they were restrained in a carseat!
  • Don’t be afraid to shout out a little Kindermusik in the airport. People love it, and anyone would much rather see a singing, giggling child than one who is whining or fussing. (Yes, I have been known to break into actual Kindermusik dances while waiting to board a plane. Anything to keep a crying child soothed. Plus, it worked.)
  • Remember, everyone gets tired of sitting too long, and adapted fingerplays and movement activities are great for getting the blood flowing as well as raising everyone’s spirits.  If you’re in Village, think about trying the “Pig Jig” chant or “Toodala”.  Kids from Our Time might get a kick out of “Johnny & Katie”, “The Frog in the Bog” or “All By Myself”.  Imagine That! kids might love “Three Blue Pigeons” (as a fingerplay) or even making up silly words with the song “Allee Galloo.”  Even circle songs like “All the Day Long” or “Ha, Ha, This A-Way” can be done in the car or on a plane, though it sometimes means stomping into thin air.
  • Last but not least, use your favorite lullabies to help soothe your little one to sleep.

With a few songs from class you can turn a long day on the road into a time to build memories and make connections you’ll share together forever.

Summer and Fall 2011 Schedule is Now Online

We are excited to announce that the Summer and Fall 2011 Schedule is online and ready for viewing.  And of course, just in time, since Reenrollment starts Monday, April 4 for currently enrolled families and April 18 for the Public.

One quick note: We have had a ton of interest in “family-style” classes for Summer as well as Young Child – Semester 1 classes for Fall.  After much discussion, we determined that for these two sets of classes we still don’t have a great sense of what day/time will be the best fit for you, our sweet families.  If you are currently enrolled and/or hoping to enroll soon, please contact us to let us know your preference for days/times for these classes, and we will do our absolute best to make it happen in time for the second week of re-enrollment, when currently enrolled families are allowed to switch to new class days/times or move up in agegroups.  We hope this will allow us to offer the classes you want at a time that works for you!

Themes for Fall 2011

(Summer Themes are available here.)

Kindermusik Village (ages 0-18 months)

The Village classes include two different units, each meeting 7 weeks followed by a favorites class the 15th week.

Feathers The musical poems of Woody Guthrie, bird songs, and the naturally occurring sounds in nature help babies develop an early appreciation—and accelerated aptitude—for language, movement, and music in this class.

Home Materials: CD with over 25 specially-selected recordings from class, Kindermusik chimeball, a colorful picture book of birds—Feathers, and a set of Art Banners for the nursery wall that strengthens vision and promotes early literacy.

Do-Si-Do —Pick up your baby and dance. Dance the Charleston, the Tango, and the Cha-Cha and learn why dancing with your baby helps develop vital learning skills—from head-to-toe. In this class, play a variety of baby appropriate instruments, and dance with fun props.

Home Materials: CD with songs from class, an instrument—Kindermusik eggshaker and scarf, a picture board book—Do-Si-Do—with lilting move-to-it rhyming text, and a set of Art Banners for the nursery wall that strengthens vision and promotes early literacy.

Kindermusik Our Time (for ages 18 months – 3 years)

Wiggles & Giggles Welcome to Wiggles & Giggles, a wonderful blend of the unlimited physical energies and the uninhibited playfulness of the Kindermusik Our Time aged child!  The songs, dances, and activities in this unit were chosen to reflect the importance of movement in the life of the toddler as we splash in the tub, hop like frogs, and take pretend boat rides.  An additional emphasis on the emotional life of the toddler leads to a class full of giggles, tickles, hugs, and joyful steps towards new independence.

Home Materials: Double CD features 50 songs, sounds, and recordings of favorite activities from class; two story books—Watch Me! and Pete and P.J., to develop early literacy skills; Home Activity Book; and specially-made pair of zigzag blocks—instrument to develop rhythm and hand-eye coordination-all conveniently stored in a Wiggles & Giggles carry bag.

Kindermusik Imagine That! (for ages 3-5 years)

See What I Saw – Take a trip to Grasshopper Park where sunshine, picnics, boat rides, playgrounds, and tree houses fill your days.  Learning through the pretend play that your preschoolers adores, we start to build an early music vocabulary while strengthening vital listening skills and musicianship through music and singing!  Plus, every activity has some at-home adaptations, so you can take part in the learning.  With a slide-whistle as a featured instrument, and a multi-cultural collection of music, your preschooler will develop his musical skills, as well as the social and intellectual skills he’ll need in school.

Home Materials: Two books—Can You Find Me? and The Ant Picnic Feast, Two Home CDs, See What I Saw Play Set, a Family Activity Book, a slide whistle and lumi sticks instruments, and a backpack.

Kindermusik for the Young Child Semester 1 (for children ages 5-7)

Everything your child learns later in semesters 2, 3, and 4 begins with this early introduction to singing, reading, and writing music and rhythm. Through dances and games that focus on rhythmic development, we’ll learn a keyboard instrument—the glockenspiel—which will be used throughout all the Young Child classes. Your At Home Materials provide the music, instruments, stickers, and activities for a home version of the same playful activities you’ll hear about from class, so your child—and you!—can learn where you’re most comfortable: at home.
Home Materials: Children’s Folder with stickers, games bag, and Music At Home Cards, Family Songbook, Home CD of music from class, glockenspiel, and canvas bag (during first semester).

Kindermusik for the Young Child Semester 3 (for children ages 5- 7 who have completed Semesters 1 & 2)

Appalachian music is a featured musical style this semester. First, you and your child will build a two-stringed dulcimer instrument with materials that we’ll provide. Then in class we’ll learn to play chords and simple melodies on the instrument you built together. We’ll also explore rhythm concepts through dance with an introduction to the basic steps in jazz, ballet, and tap dances. Your Home Materials include dulcimer-making materials, activity cards, and music that features recordings from Appalachia, African-America, and Native American music, as well as the Western Art music of the Nutcracker Suite.

Home Materials: Children’s Folder with stickers, games bag, and Music At Home Cards, Family Songbook, Home CD of music from class, and dulcimer.

Kindermusik Family Time (for ages 0-5 years)

Movin’ and Groovin’ is a romping, rolling, stretching good time for the whole family. This unit of Family Time will explore lots of different ways to move—high and low, fast and slow, zigzag, curvy, and more. Family members will chug around the classroom like trains, clip-clop like horses, and roll over like puppy dogs. They’ll hear a story about playing tag together in Can You Catch Me?, and read about a jungle hokey-pokey in Put Your Left Paw In. Show your best groovin’ moves—it’s time for Movin’ & Groovin’.

Home Materials:  Two Books—Can You Catch Me? and Put Your Left Paw In, two Home CDs, Family Guide, and two sensory balls.

Ms. Joy will be offering activities at this time to fit the needs of those kids enrolled in “Village” or “Our Time”, aiming for activities for kids who are in the 9 – 26 months age group.  This will be a perfect way for many of our older toddlers especially to get a taste of “Our Time” before moving up.
