Meet our Educators

Our Kindermusik Educators include performers, teachers, former professors, and even two music therapist.  Each comes to the classroom with an immense amount of training and preparation in Music and Early Childhood Education, and most of our teachers actually hold graduate degrees with an emphasis in one or both of these fields.  If you ask any of them why they teach Kindermusik they will say that it’s the perfect blend of their love of children and their passion for music.  We’re in the business of changing the world one child at a time through dance, song, and play.

Joy Granade – Kindermusik Educator, Program Director

A graduate of Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama and the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, Joy Granade holds both a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in Vocal Performance. Through the years she has fostered a love of singing, theatre, early childhood music, and educational outreach teaching voice at Millikin University and the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign, working as Musical Director for the Urbana Park District Summer Youth Musical, and writing and performing youth music outreach programs in central Illinois. In 2003, Joy founded a Kindermusik program in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois which grew quickly to over 100 children in weekly classes of joyful exploration and spontaneous musical play.  Then in 2005, after the birth of her first son, Joy started Kindermusik with Joy at the UMKC Community Music and Dance Academy.  Each year since 2008 the program has been awarded Maestro status  and is now respected for being in the top 1% of programs worldwide.  For Joy, Kindermusik is not only the perfect way to combine her love of music with her love for teaching children, but also a program whose educational principles reflect the standards of high quality pedagogy and community music making in which she so strongly believes.

Darcy Maret – Kindermusik Educator, Administrative Assistant

A saxophonist, Darcy Maret has taught in both group and private settings as a Music Professor at Northwest Missouri State University and Creighton University, and Elementary Music teacher in Kearney and St. Joseph, and even as an Elementary French teacher.  As a teacher and mom of a preschooler, Darcy delights in watching the faces of young children light up with the joy of music and knows firsthand the delight and learning that are shared in a Kindermusik classroom.

Erin McAlpin – Kindermusik Educator, Sub

Miss Erin has a passion for music, children and families and is trilled with the opportunity to combine all three with Kindermusik.  Miss Erin started her musical career with piano lessons at age 6.  She was hooked and went on to get an undergraduate degree in music therapy at the University of Missouri-Kansas City followed by an internship at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbournem Australia, and becoming a board certified music therapist.  Inspired by how music promotes moments of connection and bonding between parents and children, she found herself back at the University of Missouri-Kansas City pursuing a graduate degree in music therapy with a focus on adoptive families.  Miss Erin also works as a graduate teaching assistant, piano teacher, nanny, and full-time Aunt of 8 nieces and nephews.

Miss Erin is thrilled to be teaching Kindermusik, a program she knows promotes whole child development and that all important connection between children and parents.  In fact, Miss Erin believes so wholeheartedly in the power of Kindermusik that this fall she will be conducting research on the use of Kindermusik as a curriculum to promote bonding for adoptive parents and children.

Erika Durman – Kindermusik Educator

For years, Miss Erika and her daughter have enjoyed Kindermusik and the hours of bonding the activities provide, in class and at home. Erika was delighted to join Kindermusik with Joy in 2013 as an educator and have the opportunity to share the same joy and value she experiences with other families. For her, Kindermusik balances children’s need for learning with their delight for play.

Erika has a Bachelor of Arts in Music with an emphasis in piano performance from Graceland University and a Master of Arts in Music from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and maintains an active piano studio and accompanying schedule. Her private studio curriculum shares many philosophies with the Kindermusik curriculum, including movement, child-centered approach, and whole child development activities.  Miss Erika has worked with children of all ages in a variety of settings – from daycare to teaching gymnastics. She is looking forward to new experiences and growing with families enrolled in her classes again in the Spring of 2014.

Laura Lowry – Kindermusik Educator

When we asked Miss Laura about why she wanted to teach Kindermusik she said she loved the opportunity to make music, help children fall in love with music, and help parents and children grow and learn.  Music has always been a part of her life, from the time she was growing up in Huntsville, TX where she took voice and piano lessons and sang in children’s choirs until now as she is diligently pursuing her D.M.A. in Vocal Performance at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music & Dance.  Sharing music with others is her passion whether she’s performing around the KC area, directing the children’s choir at her church, or now – teaching Kindermusik.

Miss Laura is excited to help families to explore, laugh, imagine, and grow with each other through music and movement.

Lindsey Lock – Kindermusik Educator

Miss Lindsey could not be more excited to rejoin the Kindermusik community as an educator in the Fall of 2016. A former graduate of the Kindermusik program in her younger days, Lindsey has experienced the importance of music in young child’s development first hand. She holds a degree in Vocal Performance with a focus in Education through Avila University  and has a strong knowledge of Music Therapy and Early Childhood Development. A “big kid” herself, Lindsey has always enjoyed working with children and thinks that there is nothing better than being part of a child’s life. She truly believes in the educational benefit of Kindermusik and could not be more proud to have the opportunity to instill it’s values in young children.
