Mrs. Murphy’s Chowder

In honor of my friends in Tell Me a Tale this summer.  This is the favorite from class at our house that everyone now sings non-stop!

You can make your own Mrs. Murphy’s Chowder at home.  Try one of these or make your own variations.

  • Soup pot
  • Bowls (1 per child)
  • Spoon spoons (1 per child)
  • Base for “soup” – possibilities might include orange Jell-O, applesauce, Sprite/7-up, vanilla pudding or yogurt
  • “Chowder” ingredients – your favorites from small marshmallows, gummy bears/snakes/fish, raisins, dried fruit, jelly beans, banana, apple, pineapple, mandarin oranges, peaches, pears, raisins, grapes, cherries, blueberries, granola, fruity cereals, circle cereals, etc.

Choose your base – whether Jell-O based or Pudding or Yogurt

For Jell-O base, ahead of time bring 1 jar (12 oz) of applesauce to a gentle boil.  Stir in Jell-O till it dissolves.  Then add one can of Sprite/7-up or similar soda.  Refrigerate until congealed.  When you’re ready for the snack, pull the Jell-O mix out and let it become soupy.

For a more healthy base try vanilla pudding or yogurt.

Then add your favorite ingredients.  You could even make up your own version of the song for “Mrs. Granade’s Chowder” or “Mr. Sam’s Chowder”, using your child’s or your family’s name.
