The Magic Flute

Our students in Kindermusik for the Young Child – Semester 1 listened to one of my favorite operas this week, W.A. Mozart’s The Magic Flute.  This opera is not only beautifully written but lots of fun for kids, often staged with elaborate costumes and a fairy-tale like story.  In fact,  you might enjoy sharing these excerpts from the opera as staged by the amazing Julie Taymor (who also created the stage version of The Lion King).  This staging was done by the Metropolitan Opera in New York in a shortened version done entirely in English (rather than the original German) in order to make it more accessible for kids. I’m posting here the same three excerpts your kiddos listened to in class:

Tamino Playing the Magic Flute

The Queen of the Night (As a heads up, the Queen of the Night is a bit scary if you fully understand what she is doing.)

The Papageno and Papagena Duet with the amazing Nathan Gunn
