Scrub! Scrub! Scrub!

Washing dishes can be fun for toddlers.  Help your child learn about the process of washing by making a game of it.  You will need:

  • plastic dishes, pots and pans
  • 2 dish tubs
  • dishcloth
  • mild liquid detergent
  • drainer rack
  • dishtowels

Begin with “dirty” plastic dishes in a tub of warm water and detergent; “scrub, scrub, scrub” with a dishcloth; place clean dishes in a tub of warm rinse water; “rinse rinse rinse”; place rinsed dishes in the drianer; “rub rub rub” with a dishtowel.  Clean dishes!  If you want, chant along with the above words from the song “In My House” (from the Our Time Milk & Cookies Class and CD) or sing “This is the way we wash the dishes” to the tune of The Mulberry Bush.

Fun Variations on the Theme: You might also enjoy “scrub, scrub, scrubbing” in the tub, whether it’s just giving your child a washcloth and helping her give herself a bath or even throwing toys in the tub that need a bath.  My boys personally love to bring dinosaurs to the tub for a bath each night.  Other kids might like scrubbing play dishes in the bathtub, plastic cars, or even a favorite doll.  There’s no end of fun that can be had with a little water, a little bubbles, and a lot of silliness.
